Engaging in exchange with other artists and experiencing new cultures can enrich artists’ creativity and significantly influence their work on artistic projects.Up to now, both the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture and KulturKontakt Austria have successfully implemented Artists in Residence programmes, which, in recent years, have become an important factor in the strengthening of international networks between artists and the Austrian art scene. In order to promote the visibility and public awareness of these programmes, they are now being amalgamated and newly structured. After a transition phase, in which the programmes will be continued in the established manner while being provided with new organisational features, the grants for the new, jointly implemented Artists in Residence programme will be advertised as of 2014. From then on, a total of 50 residencies in the fields of fine arts, artistic photography, design, video and media art, composition, literature and literary translation, contemporary dance and choreography will be available. In addition, residencies for cultural educators and curators have been created. The residencies in the field of dance and choreography are distinguished by a special feature: the grants are offered in cooperation with Tanzquartier Wien. The residencies vary in length from one to three months, depending on the art field; the selection of the grant winners is made by several juries consisting of renowned experts from the respective fields. The chosen Artists in Residence can expect an ideal setting in which to work intensively on artistic projects. They are provided with living accommodations either in an annex of Schloss Laudon, a baroque palace surrounded by a park in Vienna’s 14th district, or in more central apartments located in Vienna’s 3rd and 9th districts. Two communal studios are also available for the artists’ use. Besides a monthly allowance of EUR 800 for living expenses and a subsidy of EUR 300 for material costs in the fields of fine arts, artistic photography, design, video and media art and composition, Artists in Residence are also provided with prepaid mobile phones and Internet access. At the end of their residency, they are given an opportunity to present their works in an exhibition. In addition to working on their own art projects, networking with the Austrian arts scene is an integral part of each Artist in Residence’s sojourn in Vienna. For this reason, the programme also offers visits to galleries, ateliers, museums etc. and provides contacts to the scenes of literature and publishing and access to musical life in Vienna. As often as possible, the Artists in Residence are given free tickets to art fairs, book fairs, performances at Tanzquartier Wien, the “ImPulsTanz” international dance festival and other events. Also, if they wish to do so, all Artists in Residence have the possibility of participating actively in KulturKontakt Austria’s “Artists in Residence Go To School” programme by holding readings or leading workshops for pupils at schools in Austria.EligibilityThis call is open to artists, writers, composers, curators and art educators whose place of residence is outside of Austria. In addition, art educators and curators are also invited to apply. The residencies are available for the following disciplines:Visual artsArt photographyVideo andmedia artDesignCompositionLiterature and literary translationContemporary dance and choreographyA (basic) command of the German and/or English language is necessary.
