Atlanta Bridgescape Contest Could Give 2 Bridges A New Look

Several organizations want to change that.Midtown Alliance, Central Atlanta Progress and others are holding a design competition to transform two bridges over I-75/85. The first is the 10th Street Bridge in Midtown Atlanta. The other is the Courtland Street and Ralph McGill Boulevard Bridge downtown.Eventually, they could include things like canopies, unique lighting and areas for pedestrians and bicycles. Jennifer Ball of Central Atlanta Progress says the goal of the Atlanta Bridgescape Competition is to make the bridges more appealing to tourists and Atlanta drivers.“Maybe someone sees an amazing bridge and then gets off and comes and visits,” Ball says.For those of us that live and work in the area, knowing that we have to cross a bridge or maybe go under the connector is just a mental barrier, so we’re also hoping that we can reconnect ourselves by making sure the bridges and places are more exciting and engaging places to be.”Between now and Thursday, you can go online and give your input on which finalists should win the contest. The winners will be announced Friday.Design improvements and enhancements on two Peachtree Street bridges over the connector are expected to begin soon. Funding for those bridges came from businesses in community improvement districts managed by Midtown Alliance and Central Atlanta Progress.
